You may have seen the iconic L.L. Bean Boat & Tote - a staple in every East Coast prepper's wardrobe since 1965 - on fashionistas like Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy and Gwyneth Paltrow. Or, more often, in the checkout line at Trader Joe's, as its 500-pound weight seems made for hauling groceries all over town.
But have you seen one with the monogram ‘Psycho’ in black cursive? Or how about ‘Hermès’ in an orange font (a shade eerily similar to the Hermès signature). These bold twists on the classic WASP have become an unlikely summer trend, reviving a septuagenarian classic.
‘I saw a woman in Fort Greene Park the other day with a Sweetgreen monogram on hers and a sigh escaped me,’ says Paul McCallion of Brooklyn, whose December tweet about his black L.L. Bean backpack embroidered with Balenciaga went viral. ‘I'm just a practical New England mum at heart.’
